CRC NEWS AND PRAYER ITEMS

GROUNDWORK:  The Gift of Service – We use the word “service” in many contexts today: community service, worship service, military service, and more.  Study 1 Corinthians 12:1-7, John 13:12-17, and Romans 12:1-3 with Groundwork to remember the biblical definition of service and why it’s an important part of a Christian’s life.  Listen now at GroundworkOnline.com.

KIDS CORNER: Three Toes Willy – Liz discovers a superhero in a most unlikely place.  Who is this hero and where did that lizard come from?   Listen now at kidscorner.net and subscribe to KC’s weekly emails for future episodes.  Download KC’s Lent 2019 devotionals to lead your family’s Bible study as you prepare for Easter.

FAMILY FAITH FORMATION TIP – Looking at mementos often sparks storytelling.  Create a “family faith box” in which you collect mementos of your faith journey together.  It could include baptism outfits, church bulletins from significant events, photos, wedding vows, and more.  Have fun at family gatherings looking at the mementos and sharing stories of God’s faithfulness. (Faith Formation Ministries; crcna.org/FaithFormation)

BIBLICAL GUIDE TO DISCIPLINE – Discipline is one of the most important — and challenging — responsibilities of parenting.  “Biblical Discipline: A Guide for Christian Parents,” an ebook from Family Fire, offers encouragement and answers your questions about child discipline.  Get the ebook with your free email subscription at FamilyFire.com/Discipline.

BAPTISM OF EVERLY JANE VANDE VOORT

PREPARATION

What does baptism signify?

By it we are received into God’s church and set apart from all other people and religions, that we may be dedicated entirely to him, bearing his mark and sign.  It also witnesses to us that he will be our God forever, since he is our gracious Father.

What else does it mean?

Baptism signifies to us that just as water washes away the dirt of the body when it is poured on us and also is seen on the body of the baptized, so too the blood of Christ does the same thing internally, in the soul, by the Holy Spirit.

Should our children be baptized too?

Yes, we believe our children ought to be baptized and sealed with the sign of the covenant, as little children were circumcised in Israel on the basis of the same promises made to our children.  Christ has shed his blood no less for washing the little children of believers than he did for adults.

Is the significance of baptism, then, similar to circumcision?

Yes, baptism does for our children what circumcision did for the Jewish people. That is why Paul calls baptism the “circumcision of Christ.”

PRESENTATION

PROFESSION OF FAITH

   Questions for the parents.

   Question for the congregation.

.. Do you promise to love, encourage, and support these brothers and sisters by teaching the gospel of God’s love, by being an example of Christian faith and character, and by giving the strong support of God’s family in fellowship, prayer, and service?

.. Congregation:  We do.

Affirmation of Faith – the Apostles’ Creed

.. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

BAPTISM

DECLARATION, BLESSING, AND WELCOME

Brothers and sisters, we now receive Everly into Christ’s church.  Do you welcome her in love, and do you promise to pray for, encourage, and help nurture her in the faith?

Congregation:  We do, God helping us.

   Let us bless Everly together:

Congregation:  The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.  Amen.

GROUNDWORK: Understanding Death and Christ’s Return – Many of us find the subject of death uncomfortable.  It doesn’t need to be.  Study 1 Thessalonians 4:13-5:11 with groundwork to remember the hope we have and grasp the clarity Paul provides regarding a Christian understanding of death and why it relates directly to Christ’s return. Listen now at GroundworkOnline.com.

KIDS CORNER: 100% Club – Whose approval is important?  Liz finds out when he’s invited to join the most exclusive club in school.  Listen now at kidscorner.net and subscribe to KC’s weekly emails for future episodes.  Download KC’s Valentine Card Collection to share with family and friends.

FAMILY FAITH FORMATION TIP – Make faith formation a part of birthday celebrations this year.  Thank God for the birthday person and share some of the ways that person blesses your family and others.  Talk about the unique gifts God has given him or her. Or pass birthday candles out to family members and ask them to name one thing they love about the birthday person before placing the candle on the cake.  Affirmation is the best birthday gift of all! (Faith Formation Ministries; crcna.org/FaithFormation)

GROUNDWORK: Pleasing God Not People – Should we really trust all pastors equally?  What qualifies a person to share the gospel message? Join Groundwork as we examine 1 Thessalonians 2 to discover Paul’s teaching on authority and the importance of our discernment, motivation, and responsibility for the gospel message at GroundworkOnline.com.

KIDS CORNER: Walk It, Talk It – Liz and Spike want to figure out how to buy fancy shoes so they can be cool.  When their plans to raise money flop, they joke about stealing the shoes.  But it isn’t long before their joke causes big problems.  Listen now at kidscorner.net and subscribe to KC’s weekly emails for future episodes.  Download KC’s Collection of Memories Kit 2019 for a family activity today.

FAMILY FAITH FORMATION TIP – It’s easy for kids to think of Bible people like Moses and David as mythical characters rather than real, flesh and blood, flawed people.  When you read Bible stories where the main character does something wrong (and there are many!), emphasize that God works through imperfect people, even when they make mistakes.  And share stories with your kids of how God is at work in your own imperfect life.  (Faith Formation Ministries; crcna.org/FaithFormation)

GROUNDWORK: All You Need – If you spend any time watching TV or trolling the internet, you’ll quickly discover there’s a lot you just can’t live without…at least according to advertisers.  Join Groundwork as we study the Apostle Paul’s reminder to early Christians and to us in 1 Thessalonians 1 that in Christ we have all we need in life. Listen now at GroundworkOnline.com.

KIDS CORNER: What Not to Wear – Lacey talks Lucille into buying clothes she knows her mother won’t want her to wear.  What happens when Lucille starts lying and hanging out with the wrong gang of kids?  What will Liz do? Listen now at kidscorner.net and subscribe to KC’s weekly emails for future episodes.  Download KC’s Collection of Memories Kit 2019 for a family activity today.

FAMILY FAITH FORMATION TIP – It’s true that faith is “caught” just as much as it’s “taught”.  Kids will learn to value Bible reading more if you let them “catch” you reading God’s Word on your own — not just in church or during family devotions.  Talk with them about what you’re reading and how it connects with your daily life.
