FAMILY FAITH FORMATION TIP:  Food for thought – Robert Mulholland Jr. observes, “Every action taken, every response made, every dynamic of relationship, every thought held, every emotion allowed:  these are the minuscule arenas where, bit by bit, we are shaped into some kind of being.  Life is, by its very nature, spiritual formation.”

June 9, 2019 at 6:00 p.m.

Welcome and Opening Prayer                                                                                                Pastor Paul Bradford

Three Hymn Settings                                                                                                                       Gerhard Krapf

“Holy God, We Praise Your Name” (*Singing: The Celebration Hymnal #2:1-3)

“This Is My Father’s World” (Text for Meditation: The Celebration Hymnal #143)

“Blest Be the Tie That Binds” (Singing: The Celebration Hymnal #426:1-3)

Choir Anthem                             “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”                                    Gilbert M. Martin

Three Hymn Settings                                                                                                                         Joe Utterback

“Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart” (Singing: The Celebration Hymnal #390:1, 2, 4)

“Jesus Loves Me” (Singing: The Celebration Hymnal #185:1)

“My Hope is Built on Nothing Less” (Text for Meditation: The Celebration Hymnal #526)

Joe Utterback, born in 1944, is a highly acclaimed concert jazz pianist. He is also a church musician, serving the First Congregational Church of Stratford, Connecticut since 1996 as Music Director and organist. Why jazz in church? It is another musical “language” that can provide its own depth of meaning. “Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart” contains jazz-influenced harmonies with the rhythm of the hymn. “Jesus Loves Me” has a happy, yes, even jaunty, rhythm for its first setting. A second stanza follows with melodic riffs in jazz style, ending the piece with a return to the rhythm with which it began. “My Hope is Built” is all-out jazz rhythm. It is highly energetic. Following the text of the final refrain will reveal very strong rhythm and texture to reflect “the solid rock…” followed by a great prolongation produced by rapid runs and broken chords for the “sinking” sand. I call it expressive word painting!

Offertory                                                    Offering received for Resonate Global Mission
An Organ and Piano Duet: “Holy, Holy, Holy” (Text for Meditation: Hymnal #3)                        Dan Miller

Hymn Prelude on “Beautiful Savior” (Singing: Psalter Hymnal #373:1, 4)                               Aaron David Miller

Partita on “How Firm a Foundation” (*Singing: The Celebration Hymnal #408:1-4)                   Alfred V. Fedak

  1. Prelude (Broadly, with great warmth”)
  2. Canon (“Simply”)
  3. Diversion (“Whimsically”)
  4. Chorale (“Smoothly, but with confidence”)
  5. Trumpet Tune (“Energetic, with heavy accents”)
  6. Meditation (“Tenderly, with freedom”)
  7. Finale (“Happily, but not too fast”)

*Benediction

* = Please stand if able.

Please join us for a time of fellowship and refreshments on the lower level following the service.

OPENING AND GREETING

Welcome and Announcements…………………………………………………………………………………….

Call to Worship………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Leader: “Grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ through the working of the Holy Spirit.” This is the greeting of Christ, who arose from the grave.

All:   Jesus died and rose that we might have eternal life.  We give him thanks!

Leader: This same Christ has ascended to the Father.

All:   He ascended that we might experience God’s presence and power. Praise him!

*Opening Prayer and Mutual Greeting…………………………………………………………………………

PRAISE TO GOD

*Sing…………………………………………. Jesus Shall Reign…………………………………………………..

*We Profess What We Believe – (Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A 46, 47 & 49)………………..

Leader: What do you mean by saying “He ascended to heaven?”

All:   That Christ, while his disciples watched, was lifted up from earth to heaven and will be there for our good until he comes again to judge the living and the dead.

Leader: But isn’t Christ with us until the end of the world as he promised us?

All:   Christ is truly human and truly God.  In his human nature Christ is not now on earth; but in his divinity, majesty, grace and Spirit he is not absent from us for a moment.

Leader: How does Christ’s ascension to heaven benefit us?

All:   First, he pleads our cause in heaven in the presence of his Father.

Second, we have our own flesh in heaven; a guarantee that Christ our head will take us, his members, to himself in heaven.

Third, he sends his Spirit to us on earth as a further guarantee.  By the Spirit’s power we make the goal of our lives, not earthly things, but the things above where Christ is, sitting at God’s right hand.

The bread that we break is a sharing in the body of Christ.

The cup for which we give thanks is a sharing in the blood of Christ.

The cup that we drink is our participation in the blood of Christ.

LIFE GROUPS:  This fall, Pella 2 will begin Life Groups.  Life Groups are small groups of 8-12 people that faithfully meet together to share life, study God’s Word, support one another, and serve others.  This summer we will run a pilot Life Group, led by Pastor Paul. For this group we are looking for people who would be open to leading a Life Group in the near future. If married, we’d like for husband and wife to attend together if possible. This initial group will include Life Group leadership training and prayer ministry training. We’ll hold an information meeting on Sunday, June 9, at 3:30 p.m. at the parsonage. We’ll begin weekly meetings (same time and place) on June 23. If you are interested, please contact Pastor Paul by email (plbradford@me.com) or phone (641-628-3309 or 248-824-3662). We’re excited about this new venture for Pella 2!

SERVE OPPORTUNITY:  The Family Ministries Team is planning a “Labor Day” event to kick off our fall youth programs and invite families in the community to come visit our church and see what we have to offer.  Some ideas include bounce houses, yard games, booths with games and information about our programs and, of course, delicious food.  If you’d like to be part of the group planning this event, please email kathrynmagnussen@gmail.com.

FROM BRENDA HUGEN:  We are headed to Sierra Leone June 8-17 and requesting prayers for our trip.  I am headed back and this year taking Taryn (3rd trip) and Ty (his first trip) along with my nephews Kenyon & Drew Geetings (their first trip also).  I am so excited to share this experience with them.  Watching someone experience it for the first time is always so neat.  It’s different for everyone and each trip is unique too.  We are the only ones from Iowa, the rest of the team is from Nebraska.  Please pray for safety in travel, good relationships among our team, chances to witness along the way (and the courage to do so) and for all the children and adults we will be working with in Sierra Leone.  We do not have our itinerary yet, but the one constant is spending time and working with the children at the orphanage.  Please pray for the children that they can feel Christ’s love thru us and that they know they are worthy and not beat down by the lies of Satan whispering they are worthless.  Please pray for the Aunties and Uncles that work at the orphanage as they provide a daily model of a Christian’s life.  They are very important role models for the children.  Thank you so much for your support over the years.  We appreciate your prayers while we are gone and also your prayers for Troy and Teah as they remain home.  We cannot wait to be Christ’s hands and feet in Sierra Leone! –

To whom much is given, much is expected.  Thank you, Brenda, Taryn and Ty Hugen

FREEDOM HOUSE is having their 3rd birthday party and a silent auction on Friday, June 7, from 6:00-8:30 p.m., at the Caldwell Shelter House.  There will be supper, games, music and more!  See the bulletin board for details.

CHRISTIAN OPPORTUNITY CENTER’S GOLF CLASSIC is Friday, June 7, at Bos Landen Golf Club.  Join us on this extraordinary year as we celebrate 50 years of proving what’s possible! In 1969 parents of five children with disabilities joined together with a shared dream that their children have access to quality Christian education close to home.  Their dream is still alive today. All this would not be possible without the continued support of our community and events like the COC Golf Classic. For more information visit www.christianopportunity.org or call 641-628-1162.

PEORIA CHRISTIAN SCHOOL is looking for a new part-time secretary for the 2019-2020 school year.  The job would start August 1 and run to the end of the school year.  If you are interested in this position or know someone who is, please email Jeremy Copenhaver at principal@peoriachr.org.

What is the kind of prayer that pleases God and that He listens to?

First, we must pray from the heart to no other than the one true God, revealed to us in his Word, asking for everything God has commanded us to ask for.

Second, we must fully recognize our need and misery so that we humble ourselves in God’s majestic presence.

Third, we must rest on this unshakable foundation; even though we do not deserve it, God will surely listen to our prayer because of Christ our Lord.  That is what God promised us in his Word.
