Pella II CRC Announcements for May 4, 2020

OUR CHURCH FAMILY:  Please join with Tim and Debbie Nelson and their family in praying in the name of Jesus for miraculous healing of Tim’s lungs in his significant battle with pneumonia (a complication of chemotherapy).  Tim is at the University of Iowa hospital in Iowa City.  The Nelsons began attending Pella II last winter.

We extend our Christian sympathy to Byron and Clarissa Van Zee on the death of Clarissa’s mother, Peggy Merida, on April 23.  May God comfort them with the hope of eternal life in Jesus our Lord.

MAY WORSHIP SERVICES:  Worship for May 3 and May 10 will continue to be via recorded services online.  No in-person worship will be held.  We are thankful for Gov. Reynold’s re-opening of public worship in Marion County.  Moreover, the health and safety of the congregation and community are of utmost concern.  The first Sunday for in-person worship is currently planned to be May 17.  Marion County officials and the CDC have issued guidelines for public worship.  We are also in contact with other Pella area churches, and are monitoring public health developments as some restrictions are loosened.  Information from all of these sources will be taken into consideration in determining how and when Pella II will resume in-person worship.  When in-person worship re-opens hopefully on May 17, please expect changes before, during, and after the service in order to comply with current health and safety guidelines.  We look forward to worshiping together in a manner that seeks to protect the health of the congregation and community.  We will keep the congregation informed via email and One Call on the plans for re-opening in-person worship. – Pella II Governing Board

ORGAN UPDATE:  Earlier this year, we announced that a potential buyer came to see the organ first-hand.  This same buyer has now expressed interest in purchasing the organ.  The buyer and church leadership are working on specifics of a purchase agreement.  As part of the agreement, Pella II would retain the organ until mid-April or May of 2021. This is around one month prior to our June 1, 2021, closing date on the sale of the building.  We feel that the buyer would be a good home for the organ, and that it would continue to be used in worshiping God.  Updates will be communicated as developments warrant. – Pella II Governing Board

TODAY DEVOTIONALS AVAILABLE:  The May/June Today Devotionals have been placed in the enclosure of the elevator entrance so please pick up your copy any time.  These devotionals can also be found digitally online each day at www.todaydevotional.com.

ADVANCE NOTICE:  Pella Christian Grade School has tentatively scheduled the Annual Society Meeting for Tuesday, June 9 at 7:00 p.m.  See the school newsletter for details.

FROM THE PECKHAM’S:  We miss our students!  We regularly had priceless times of companionship watching the sunrise and praying for each other but we still see our students by means of Zoom.

Thank you to all who sent birthday greetings.  If you did not know that April 7 is my birthday and our son Joe’s, that’s fine.  It was a great day, even though Nancy got too cold in the rain and cut down our bike ride from twelve to three miles.  We have another April Birthday!  Ashriel Azennith Peckham was born to Joe and Jess on April 9 in San Luis Obispo, CA.  They are doing well.

Nancy serves our Saddleback Mobilodge Park as Editor.  The group here has discovered “Mata Elang” “Eagle Eyes”.  Nancy can even find a mistake in a language she has not yet studied.  Now she is the editor of the neighborhood “Scuttlebutt” which has been printed monthly for more than fifty years.  Recently a neighbor called her just to say that last month’s issue was the best ever.  She is amazing!

Prayer Requests:

  1. Computer repair.
  2. On-line teaching: some of the students and teachers and parents need patience.
  3. Blessing neighbors: there are wonderful interactions from a safe distance.
  4. Health: especially for Dr. Andy in Danville, PA.

Keep on blessing everyone around you. – Lovingly, Lloyd and Nancy

UPDATE FROM THE LE MAHIEU FAMILY: dated April 16 – Dear family and friends, This is just a quick update to let you know that we arrived back in the U.S. almost a week ago.  It was a long trip but uneventful.  (We went from Ukarumpa – Goroka – Port Moresby – Honiara [Solomon Islands] – Honolulu – San Francisco – Dallas – Milwaukee).  Thank you so much for your prayers for us during this time.  The good-byes were difficult.  We continue to pray for friends and colleagues back in Papua New Guinea and others who have returned to their home countries.

We are living in Gibbsville, WI, in a mission home provided by the Gibbsville Refomed Church.  We  have been able to see Leif as well as Doug’s family (from a distance) and hope to see Cole soon.  We are living day by day and have not yet formulated any furlough plans.  Love and blessings, Doug, Benita, Noah and Tia

UPDATE #3 FROM THE LE MAHIEU FAMILY:  Our flight back to the U.S. has been delayed, and a new departure time to leave Port Moresby has been tentatively scheduled for April 9.  As the embassy explained, “the plane is conducting multiple missions across the Pacific to repatriate Americans.  We appreciate your patience and understanding if there are additional delays.”

We have been thankful for the unexpected delay as it has given us extra time to ponder the questions, “What should we pack? In the event that we are never able to return to Papua New Guinea what are the things we cherish most as a family?’

In addition to clothes, here is our list of special things that we do not want to leave behind:  Bibles, brand new copy of the Bau storybook Bible, books of our family vacations, Christmas ornaments, art work, written poems and essays from the kids, Photos, letters and postcards from grandparents, Noah’s and Tia’s homemade ukuleles made with our dear Aussie friends, Tia’s thimble collection, homemade birthday, valentine and Mother’s and Father’s Day cards from the kids, PNG artifacts.

And that’s 12 years of memories, relationships, and places that we hold dear in our heart packed into a few suitcases. Yet while these items bring a sort of earthly comfort in the midst of our good-byes we hold them loosely and realize our hope and salvation is in our risen Savior.

My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation.  He is my fortress.  I will never be shaken.  Psalm 62:1-2  Wishing you all a blessed Easter! – Doug, Benita, Noah and Tia

EASTER AT-HOME FAITH FORMATION TIP:  Children learn best through story, so create a special time this week to share the Easter story with the kids in your life.  Use a picture book like The Garden, the Curtain, and the Cross: The True Story of why Jesus Died and Rose Again (Good Book Co., 2016) or read stories from Jesus’ ministry, Holy Week, and Easter from a children’s Bible.  Show kids that God’s story is full of hope and joy!

SCOOP THE HEARTHSTONE LOOP!  This Sunday the Wellness Team at the Hearthstone Communities of Fair Haven East and Pella Manor have organized a Scoop the Hearthstone Loop.  Our residents have shared that during this time of isolation one of the hardest times is on Sundays when they are not able to be with their church families.  As a way of helping to lift their spirits you are invited to help them feel connected and valued THIS SUNDAY, April 5, from 4:00-4:30 by driving by and honking and waving and sharing in a spirit of community and love.  Our residents will be on their balconies and at their windows.  The route starts from Main Street — turn east on Independence St. and go two blocks, turn north on East 2nd St. and go two blocks, then east on Liberty St., drive into the parking lot and back out, continuing to East 3rd St., and turn south.

PELLA CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL has an opening for a Study Skills Instructor.  Interested candidates can contact Principal Dan Van Kooten at vankootend@pceagles.org for more information.  The teacher application packet for this opening is available on the Pella Christian High School website (www.pceagles.org).  Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

UPDATE #2 FROM THE LE MAHIEU FAMILY:  “After much prayerful consideration, our family has decided to return to the U.S.  The U.S. embassy is chartering a flight back to the U.S., and we have reserved seats.  We fly from Ukarumpa on April 5 to Goroka, overnight there, and the next morning fly to Port Moresby, then on to San Francisco via Honolulu.  We have not heard yet what quarantine protocols there might be.  From San Francisco we will make arrangements to fly to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  A mission home is available for us to use in nearby Gibbsville.  Providentially, we should be able to stay in Gibbsville for the first few months of our furlough.

“Thank you so much for your prayers.  Leaving like this feels fractured and chaotic, with so many unknowns, and is not how we envisioned leaving Ukarumpa but we put our trust in a heavenly Father who is in control of all things.  We continue to pray for all of you in these changing times.  Love and blessings -Doug and Benita, Noah and Tia”

UPDATE FROM RYAN FABER: “I had hoped that we would be on the ground in Nigeria by now, but unfortunately we are not. We’ve been waiting for approval of our Nigerian visas since mid-February.  About the time we expected our visa applications to be approved, the Nigerian government adopted a travel ban due to Covid-19. Among those countries included in the ban is the United States. My understanding is that visas will not be issued until after the ban is lifted. We hope and pray that it will be soon, but expect that it depends on the future of Covid-19 in the U.S., which we also hope and pray will not be as bad as some predict and will pass sooner than many fear! Additionally, the Nigerian government has closed the country’s international airports through April 23, so we are stuck here!

“Resonate has provided us a lot of good orientation and training material that we are working through. I also continue to work on our communication plans with supporters and supporting churches. And I am supervising a few student theses from afar via email as much as possible.

“I learned late last week that the Nigerian government has ordered all schools in the country be closed. At least at that time, while there were no classes, students could remain on campus and were encouraged to continue reading and researching, but I expect that that may be changing as well. A colleague at the college quoted John 9:4 in an email to me the other day: “While it is day we must do the work of him who sent us, for night is coming when no one can work.” He thinks a night of restrictions similar to Europe and the U.S. is also coming soon in Nigeria.  We understand why they need to shut their borders to people from countries (in Europe and the U.S.) where the coronavirus is more widespread. We hope and pray that the virus does not spread in Africa as it has in Europe. Africa (and Nigeria) are not well-prepared to handle such a crisis.

“Thank you for your prayers and for your congregation’s commitment to our mission. We appreciate it.”

GROUNDWORK:  I Believe in the Son’s Life and Death – Jesus Christ is the foundation of the Christian faith.  Join Groundwork as we examine Luke 1:26-35, Matthew 27:11-26, Luke 23:44-46, and 1 Peter 3:18-20 to help us better understand what we profess to believe about Jesus’ life and death in the Apostles’ Creed.  Listen at GroundworkOnline.com.

KIDS CORNER:  Never Give Up – Liz, Lucille, and Scooter all try to be perfect – and they all fail.  Scooter now thinks that God might just give up on him.  Is Scooter right?   Listen at kidscorner.net.   Download this month’s Kids Corner Easter puzzle and game giveaway The Bible Challenge Activity Book Five, kidscorner.net/activities.

GOOD FRIDAY AT-HOME FAITH FORMATION TIP:  Take some time today to reflect on the events of Good Friday.  Read the story, and then use questions like these as you wonder about it:  What would it be like to be a friend of Jesus that day?  How would you feel?  What would you do?

LENT AT-HOME FAITH FORMATION TIP: Spend time in the Easter story this week by engaging with it in a variety of ways.  If you have kids in your life, read it and then retell it together as you act it out or use crayons, markers, collage or even Lego to depict various scenes.  With other adults or on your own, read the story out loud several times, pausing in between to reflect and to circle or write down words that stand out for you.

CHILDREN’S BULLETINS:  Be sure to check the attachments for a Children’s Bulletin for two different ages, furnished during this unusual time by the company we subscribe to for the weekly children’s bulletins.  Also attached are two pictures of palm branches.  Children – please color one of them and email your finished picture to secretary@pella2crc.org by Thursday, April 2.  On Palm Sunday, April 5, we will try to feature them in some way with the online service.

PCHS SOCIETY MEETING and Board Nominations:  The Pella Christian High School Society meeting scheduled for April 17 has been postponed until later in May or possibly beyond.  We are currently looking for board member nominations for four open positions and would ask you to prayerfully consider whether you might be called to serve. Board members are called to serve as trustees for the mission of the school to ensure God-honoring, excellent education for students for generations to come.  Open board positions include:

District I (Calvary CRC, Faith CRC, Connect Church, Pella II CRC, Covenant Reformed)

District III (Newton CRC, Prairie City CRC, Sully CRC)

District IV (Oskaloosa I CRC, Oskaloosa Bethel CRC, Cedar CRC)

One At-Large Board Position (PCHS supporter from any church)

If you are interested in serving as a board member, please call the school or email Principal Dan Van Kooten at vankootend@pceagles.org by noon on April 6.  Each open position requires the nomination of at least two persons who are to be elected at the next PCHS Society Meeting.

FROM PELLA COMMUNITY FOOD SHELF:  We are so humbled by those reaching out to see how they can support the Pella Community Food Shelf (PCFS).  Many of the standard practices regarding receiving food have had to change due to COVID-19.

At this time, the best way to support the PCFS is by financial giving. That enables us to utilize our buying resources and provide for our friends and neighbors in need via the best possible way in accordance with the current guidelines.  We have several ways to do that:

  1. QR CodeThe locked drop box by the Food Shelf interior door in The Well fellowship area (enter on the east side through exterior door #2 or 3)
  2. By mail – P.O. Box 465, Pella, IA 50219
  3. Venmo- username: PellaCommunity_FoodShelf, or QR Code at right.

Thank you, THANK YOU for your financial support, donations, your many members who volunteer and prayers. – PCFS Team

FROM THE LE MAHIEU FAMILY:  We send you our love and greetings from Papua New Guinea.  We have been praying for you in this time of uncertainty, and we cherish your prayers as well, not only for our family but the people of Papua New Guinea.

We had plans to return to the U.S after Noah graduates, but these plans have been put on hold and our plane tickets (which had us going through Asia) have been cancelled.  Following PNG government mandates, the Ukarumpa center has been following a two-week isolation protocol. We will shelter here in Ukarumpa for now while closely following the news related to government travel bans.   While COVID-19 has found its way to PNG we really are not sure of the exact extent of its reach at this point.  We do ask for prayers for Cole and Leif back in the U.S.  Leif left New York City last week and has been following quarantine procedures in Wisconsin.  Cole remains in Lawrence, KS.  They both will continue classes online.

The Bau story book Bible dedication that was to have taken place March 26-27 has been cancelled.  We do not know when or how the story books will be distributed but trust that the Lord’s timing in all of this is perfect.

Please drop us a note and let us know how you are doing and how we can pray specifically for you and the challenges you may be facing.  Love and blessings, Doug, Benita, Noah and Tia

CRC NEWS AND PRAYER ITEMS

GROUNDWORK:  I Believe – What is a Creed?  Is the Apostles’ Creed biblical?  Join Groundwork as we begin a study of the Apostles’ Creed and the scriptures that inform it.  Dig into Romans 10:9 and Deuteronomy 6:1-9 to discover the function these summary statements have in the life of faith and the value they offer us yet today.  Listen at GroundworkOnline.com.

KIDS CORNER:  Seventh Commandment – Grandpa Anole uses the story of David and Bathsheba to teach his church school class about the seventh commandment and broken promises.  Listen at kidscorner.net.  Download KC’s Lent 2020 devotionals to lead your family’s Bible study as you prepare for Easter, kidscorner.net/activities.

LENT AT-HOME FAITH FORMATION TIP:  Many Christians practice giving something up for Lent in order to make more space for God.  If you have kids in your household, think together about how you might make more space for God this week.  For example, you might take a technology break each day and spend the time reading about Jesus’ life and ministry in The Jesus Storybook Bible or Growing in God’s Love: A Story Bible and talking about the stories together.
