OFFERINGSJanuary 10:  Freedom House

TODAY:   Installation of Elders and Deacons will take place this morning. New Governing Board Elder is Brian Van Kooten; new Shepherding Elders are Jon Van Woerkom and Matt Vos; new Deacons are Shane Tukker and Will Vande Voort. Let us be faithful in our prayers for them as they take up their service in the new year.

There will be no Church School today.  Classes will resume on January 10.

OUR CHURCH FAMILY:  “Thank you to my church family for the many Christmas cards I received. They were appreciated very much.” – Sylvia Langstraat

“Thank you for prayers, cards and expressions of sympathy in the death of our dear sister-in-law, Mary Klyn.  God’s mercies are always near.” – Sylvia Langstraat, Marion and Glenda Klyn, Les and Linda Klyn

“Thanks, Pella II, for being the hands and feet of Jesus these last several months.  For all the ways you have remembered us during our isolation we say ‘Thank You.’  We’ve not missed anything going on at church thanks to all the livestreaming you’ve done.  Now during the Christmas season, for the packages and cards dropped off by several of you, for the ‘phone caroling’ done by the choir, for the notes, pictures and little gifts sent over from the GEMS, Cadets and Sunday School kids – and – we can’t forget the ‘wave’ and Christmas greeting from all of you on Christmas morning.  The list goes on and on.  Isolation is not something we’d like to do again but your thoughtfulness has helped probably more than you realize and we were blessed by it all.  So, thank you once again, hopefully it won’t be too much longer and we’ll be able to meet with you in person.  Blessings and Happy New Year!”   Anne & Dena Bokhoven and Mae Vander Wiel.

WEDNESDAY:  Cadets bowling from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at The Dutch 200 Bowl & Grill.  Dinner will be provided.

ADVANCE NOTICE:

We’re beginning a “Discovery Life Group” for those interested in membership at Cornerstone Church, or desiring to know more about our congregation to decide if they’d like to join.  The initial meetings will be held via Zoom (due to COVID) and will begin on Thursday, January 14 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.  We’ll meet every other week.  If interested, or for more info, please contact Pastor Paul via email (plbradford@me.com), phone or text (mobile: 248-824-3662).  We currently have 8 people attending (including Pastor Paul and Tammy) and could take 4-6 more.

THANKS to our friends at Second CRC for the wonderful packet of Christmas cards.  We love you all and are so appreciative for your faithful and long-term partnership in the Gospel! – Joel and Jeannie Huyser

HYMN/SONG REQUESTS, ANYONE?  Even though “social distancing” has made it a challenge to stay connected, please be assured that you have not been forgotten!  Choir members and other musicians would be happy to serenade you with a hymn or song that’s meaningful to you, even if over the phone.  Contact Barbara Boertje DeVries with ideas, requests, and/or for encouragement!

LIVE VIDEO: During this morning’s service a live video with audio of the service is projected on a large screen TV in the Fellowship Hall in the basement for parents or others who need to leave during the service.  Restrooms are available downstairs.  Our services are also live streamed and recorded each Sunday on YouTube, bit.ly/Pella2.

OFFERING:  Our offering today will go to the “Missions Fund”.  Our offering January 10 will go to the “Freedom House”.   Undesignated cash or check offerings go towards the mission or organization of the QR Codeweek.  If you desire to contribute to Second Christian Reformed Church and its ministries, simply write “Pella 2” on the memo line of your check. You can also give online by scanning the QR code to the right or by going online to pella2crc.breezechms.com/give/online.

For those not in attendance for any reason, the below options will remain available:

  1. Online – By logging into Breeze and clicking “Give Now” any member can donate through ACH transfer or Credit/Debit Card.
  2. Mail – Checks may be mailed to the church (Second Christian Reformed Church, 609 East 1st St., Pella, IA 50219). Please indicate “Attention Deacons” on the envelope.
  3. Drop Off – Donations may be dropped off in the slot in the deacon door at the base of the NW stairs. The door on the southwest side of the church is planned to be open during office hours. Feel free to call ahead (628-2966) to make sure the door is unlocked.

SPECIFIC FACILITATOR REQUEST:  Peoria Christian School is looking for facilitators to serve in our 5th and 6th grade classroom.  This would be Monday-Friday, specifically from 10:45 until noon.  We are looking for individuals who can commit to a regular schedule for any one of those days.  If interested, please contact Jeremy Copenhaver at principal@peoriachr.org or 641-625-4131.

CRC NEWS AND PRAYER ITEMS

GROUNDWORK: Commitment and Discipleship – Following Jesus is not always easy.  Join Groundwork as we study Matthew 13:3-23, Luke 14:25-33, and Hebrews 12:1-3 to better understand the spiritual discipline of commitment and learn how we can cultivate the lifelong discipline of following Jesus Christ.  Listen at GroundworkOnline. com

KIDS CORNER:  Being God’s Copycat – In Colossians 3:12, God shows us how we can do what He does by acting with “compassions, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience”. Listen now at kidscorner.net.

AT-HOME FAITH FORMATION TIP – The Practice of Engaging Scripture:  Eugene Peterson says of Scripture engagement, “Reading is an immense gift, but only if the words are assimilated, taken into the soul — eaten, chewed, gnawed, received in unhurried delight.”  Read your favorite passage that way today.  Take time to savor and “gnaw” on it, noticing any new insights that come to mind.

CALVIN UNIVERSITY JANUARY SERIES – Each year Calvin University provides a publicly accessible series of speakers on various topics related to the Christian life and worldview.  This year the January Series runs from January 6 through 26, and because of COVID-19 is offered to us in the safety and comfort of our homes.  They are offering an impressive lineup of speakers and topics.  The series is free of charge, but you need to register to watch it.  More information on the content, speakers list, and Registration details can be found at www.calvin.edu/january.
